Most Common Dental Issues in Children
Written by Paul Vera on July 26th, 2021.
When dental problems strike for your child, it can be stressful! Luckily, most of them are easily treatable if caught early on. Some are even completely preventable! Keep reading to learn more about the most common dental issues children face and what to do.
Dental Cavities
Baby teeth are more likely to get cavities than adult teeth. The enamel on baby teeth is much thinner, leaving the teeth more susceptible to bad bacteria and decay. There are many ways to help prevent cavities in your child’s smile! The first step to maintaining great oral health is to ensure your child brushes their teeth twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste and flosses daily. The next step is to make sure they’re coming to Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry twice a year for a cleaning and exam. At the checkup, we will look for any signs of dental issues and thoroughly clean their teeth. Dentists also provide fluoride treatments at kids’ dental visits to strengthen their tooth enamel.
Dental Injuries
Accidents happen and kids can sustain dental injuries from falling or from playing sports. More often than not, dental injuries are sports related. The best way to protect your child’s teeth while they play the sport they love is to get them a custom athletic mouthguard. A mouthguard is a thick, protective retainer that absorbs shock and impact to safeguard the teeth, gums, and jaw.
Tooth Alignment Issues
Most people aren’t born with perfect teeth alignment. If your child has misaligned teeth or an over/underbite, speak to our team about orthodontic treatment. If they are too young for braces, they may be able to provide early interceptive orthodontics to help correct alignment while their teeth are first coming in. For kids old enough for orthodontic appliances, our team will work one-on-one with you to determine which orthodontic treatment best suits their needs.
