When Is Tooth Removal Necessary?

At Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry, we only ever recommend tooth removal when we’re sure that no other treatment, not even a baby root canal, will save the tooth. Some situations that might call for a tooth being pulled include extreme decay or cavities, severe dental trauma, or dental disease. Another reason might be that the tooth is interrupting proper tooth development. We believe in honest dental care, so we will always let you know exactly why tooth removal is necessary if we suggest that treatment.

Dental Extraction Aftercare

After your child has gotten a dental extraction, we’ll walk you through post-procedure instructions to help the area heal as quickly as possible. Know that a little bit of bleeding in the beginning is normal, and you can change the gauze out every 20 minutes until the blood clot forms.

If your child feels any discomfort, you can give them an over-the-counter pain medication. If they have any swelling, you can place an ice pack or a bag of frozen veggies on the area for around 20 minutes. Stick to preparing soft foods for the first day after the procedure, and don’t let your child use a straw as this could dislodge the blood clot.

Sedation Options

We’re always focused on keeping your child safe and comfortable while in our care. We’ll numb the treatment area before extracting the tooth to prevent them from feeling pain. At Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry, we also have sedation and anesthesia options to help your child relax and get through the procedure with ease. Our team is happy to go over nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and general anesthesia with you so you can decide if one is right for your child for when they get a tooth extraction.
