Can My Child Get Braces with Baby Teeth?
Written by Paul Vera on September 13th, 2021.
Many young people need braces at some point. In the past, metal braces were the only option, but there’s now clear aligner therapy like Invisalign®. For certain problems, metal braces remain the better choice. What if your child still has baby teeth? Do they need to wait until they have all their permanent teeth?
Benefits of Early Orthodontics
A child can get braces even if they still have baby teeth left! In fact, the American Association of Orthodontics recommends screenings by age 7. Our orthodontist, Dr. Andrea Font, customizes each treatment plan based on a child’s specific needs. That might mean waiting for braces or starting a treatment plan right away. Dental issues are much easier to treat when caught early.
Why Should Children Get Braces?
There are many benefits to early orthodontic intervention. We can save space for permanent teeth that haven’t come in yet and prevent crowding. Interventions also reduce the need for tooth removals and other serious dental work in the future. A straight smile is a healthy smile! Misaligned teeth are harder to clean and therefore more vulnerable to cavities.
Do Braces Hurt?
Because they’re moving your teeth around, braces can be uncomfortable at first. The longer they are on your teeth, the more comfortable they become. Your child will also most likely feel uncomfortable and sore after routine adjustments. Treat temporary soreness with over-the-counter pain medications and soft foods.
